Integrating the Social Sciences into Chesapeake Bay Restoration

On March 10, 2011, STAC organized a workshop for natural and social scientists, resource managers, students and policymakers to identify opportunities for advancing social science research in Chesapeake Bay restoration. This report summarizes the workshop. (view)

Chesapeake Bay Hydrodynamic Modeling

STAC and the Chesapeake Community Modeling Program (CCMP) held a joint workshop in June, 2011 to explore what the next generation of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Model should look like, and discuss how the Bay Program could develop a new model or models. (view)

Evaluation of the Effectiveness of SAV Restoration Approaches in the Chesapeake Bay

STAC was requested to conduct a review of the effectiveness of direct SAV restoration efforts, evaluate the efficacy of the direct restoration strategy for accelerating broader SAV recovery, and, if appropriate, provide guidance on how to improve the efforts. (view)

Review of the LimnoTech Report, Comparison of Load Estimates for Cultivated Cropland in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed

The Chesapeake Bay Partnership asked the Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee to convene an independent, expert panel to review the LimnoTech report and to make recommendations concerning the application of multiple models in Chesapeake Bay management. (view)

Exemplary Stormwater Management Report

This report is a summary of a May 13, 2010 workshop sponsored by STAC and LGAC. The workshop introduced stormwater managers and stakeholders to exemplary local stormwater programs while encouraging dialogue between stakeholder and Bay Program managers. (view)

Factsheet on Climate Change and the Chesapeake Bay

STAC recently submitted a letter to the Chesapeake Bay Program detailing the committee's investigations into climate change impacts on the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Since 2007, STAC has collaborated with scientific experts from across the region to assess the current state of climate change research as it relates to the Bay watershed. The letter outlined many concerns STAC has with the CBP programs and policies that do not correctly account for climate change. (view)

Review of Land-Use and Land Cover Dataset and Methodology

In August, STAC convened an expert panel to peer review the land-use and land cover dataset and methodology used in the Phase 5 Bay-wide Watershed Model. Overall, the panel was impressed with the technical quality of work. Reviewers recognized that the CBP applied state-of-the-art approaches where confronted with challenging conceptual and technical issues. However, they suggested that the CBP conduct systematic sensitivity analysis, develop multiple plausible scenarios, and communicate uncertainties associated with land-use and land cover future scenarios. Climate Change and the Chesapeake Bay: State-of-the Science Review and Recommendations

The report, released September 2008, details the probable effects that climate change will have on the Chesapeake Bay and explains the need to adapt restoration efforts and resource management to account for environmental changes. (view)
