Science Fora

The CRC and its partners are identifying a number of critical areas of interest to the research and management communities where the science has not been recently updated or distributed. In an effort to provide current scientific information for managing our ecosystems and living resources, CRC is convening regional scientific expertise in day-long science fora for open discussion on knowns and unknowns in specific topical areas. Following consensus, the experts will provide simple fact sheets to as clearly as possible define the state of knowledge for given areas, to be distributed for sound, science-based management decisions across the basin. Depending on the topic and partners, additional materials might be produced including newsletters or white papers to elaborate on information assembled. The first major area to be considered is agriculture and three science fora are planned. The first, with University of Maryland partners in the Center of Environmental Sciences (UMCES) and College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (UMAGNR), will exmaine soil nutrients and transport on Maryland's Eastern Shore (see Eastern Shore Nutrient Overview); other agriculture-specific topics will be identified on consultation with regional experts. Two other major areas will also be explored in the future; discussions are on-going for topics in fisheries, data management and analysis, and comparative watershed modeling. Recommendations for possible topical areas can be sent to Kevin Sellner, CRC Executive Director, at sellnerk@si.edu.

Eastern Shore Soil Nutrients
The Chesapeake Research Consortium (CRC), the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Studies (UMCES), and the University of Maryland College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AGNR) are convening the regional scientific experts on soil nutrients and runoff in Maryland's Eastern Shore are to compile what is known and not known regarding nutrient soil content and transport to local streams and rivers. A one page fact sheet will be immediately prepared, and later, a short newsletter and lengthier white paper on forum consensus, including implications for fertilizer application and potential effects on receiving waters of the region.
