CRC-NCBO Summer Internships
The Chesapeake Research Consortium and the
NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office are seeking canditates to fill several internship positions around the Chesapeake Bay region. Candidates must be college-level students entering sophomore, junior, or senior year of undergraduate study.
Habitat/Fisheries Assessment Intern - The intern will primarily support the Office's habitat assessment/fisheries priorities. A significant amount of time will be spent sampling and documenting
fish populations in Chesapeake Bay tributaries. The position entails a monitoring component including fisheries and invertebrate sampling on reef and shoreline habitats using several sampling techniques. Some data entry, literature review and other administrative
tasks will also be assigned as needed. The intern will also have the opportunity to assist NCBO staff in benthic mapping exercises, underwater grass sampling, and conducting Bay-focused outreach lessons for k-12 students. The Intern will work at NCBO in Annapolis,
MD.
Scientific Field Support Intern - The intern will support the logistical and technical aspects of the Chesapeake Bay Interpretive Buoy System (CBIBS, www.buoybay.org). The CBIBS component of
the position would include maintenance, preparation, and calibration of sensors and buoys; field service visits to buoys; web-based work on quality control and validation of data; and CBIBS product and application development. More information about CBIBS

Coastal Policy and Restoration Intern - The intern will support NCBO and RC programs by developing communication materials on science related to climate change and its impacts in the Chesapeake
Bay, supporting restoration efforts in Virginia, and participating in special events, including NOAA Restoration Day in Virginia and HarborFest in Norfolk. The Intern will work at at the
Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) in Gloucester Point, VA.
Fisheries Ecosystem Model Technician
NOAA's Chesapeake Bay Office (NCBO) works with marine scientists, coastal resource managers, and the general public to provide products to help protect, restore, and manage U.S. coastal resources. The Chesapeake Bay Office is seeking an individual to assist
with the management and development of fisheries-based ecosystem models. The technician will provide support to NCBO in moving towards the goals for ecosystem-based fisheries management and integrated assessments of the Chesapeake Bay. Specifically, the position
is designed to primarily support development and review of the Chesapeake Bay Fisheries Ecosystem Modeling and the Chesapeake Atlantis Model.

CRC Environmental Management Career Development Program

The CRC Environmental Management Career Development Program is an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in environmental science and/or management to gain professional, working experience in Chesapeake Bay policy development and implementation while
at the same time expanding personal skill sets and growing professionally. CRC works in conjunction with the Environmental Protection Agency's Chesapeake Bay Program located in Annapolis, Maryland to provide three-year opportunities for emerging environmental
professionals and stewards in which participants experience the interaction of science, policy development, and management by focusing on critical issues such as habitat, fisheries, nutrients and sediment, land use, growth and development, climate change,
monitoring, and environmental modeling within the Chesapeake Bay and its watershed.

Sustainable Fisheries Goal Implementation Team Staffer
The purpose of the Sustainable Fisheries GIT is to enhance cross-jurisdictional ecosystem based fisheries management in the Chesapeake Bay. The Fisheries GIT is comprised of the lead state fisheries managers from around the Bay and draws together a diverse
group of managers and scientists to improve management and recovery of oysters, blue crab, menhaden, striped bass, shad, herring and the ecosystem that they are a part of.
The staffer for this goal team should expect to engage in work such as drafting policy pieces, and decision support documents, and will gain hands on experience in working with natural resource managers from around the Chesapeake Bay, providing support to and
at times participating in GIT meetings.
Minimum requirements for this position include:
- Bachelor's Degree with a focus on natural or environmental science and/or policy (or a related area of study), emphasis on fishery science and/or management a plus;
- good writing and communication skills;
- ability to organize and synthesize complex information for use by leadership;
- familiarity with MS Office Suite; and
Other desired attributes include ability to work independently and under tight deadlines, plan meetings, track group tasks and activities as well as good organizational skills and passion and enthusiasm for the work and program.
